PSX Mania – 054 – Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (1998)

Completed in: 38:55

What might be the final PSX Mania game for the immediate future, we are leaving off in a damn good note. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is one of my all-time favorite puzzle games – a genre I really am not a massive fan of. The thing is though, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is as perfect a puzzler gameplay as you can ask for, even when it’s kicking your ass and not even asking if you want seconds.

I had played this semi recently via Xbox Live Arcade, so I was semi warmed up. That didn’t matter though, because the CPU can still find a way to make you look like an absolute joke. The frustration gained from it though, isn’t necessarily a negative one. Each time I get slapped, I simultaneously feel encouraged to try again and that maybe this is the run.

There aren’t many puzzle games that I will go to bat for. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is easily one of the very few. I can be punishing, but feels so rewarding once you take that CPU out. Hell, there aren’t many games in general that give that sense of accomplishment. I’m not too sure about how much this goes for these days, but if it’s a pretty penny and you own an Xbox 360/One/Series S or X, pick it up on the cheap via XBLA.
